In a swirl of Grammy festivities, Kendrick Lamar emerged victorious, sweeping up several awards for his hit “Not Like Us.” But one person who seemed unimpressed was Dennis Graham, father of famed rapper Drake.
Dennis Graham made it clear he wasn’t bothered by the Grammy Awards, or Kendrick Lamar’s diss track aimed at his son. In a social media clip, he responded nonchalantly to Lamar’s success: “I don’t care about none of that sh*t. That got nothing to do with me. All the best to him. I don’t do that bullsh*t.”
While many celebrated Lamar’s achievements, which included Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video, Dennis Graham was unfazed. Lamar’s Song of the Year acceptance speech was emotional, dedicating his win to Compton and mentioning the impact of recent wildfires in Los Angeles. “My mom and pop out there doing front flips on the couch right now. My son is six years old. Go to sleep, it’s past your bedtime right now,” he quipped, connecting with his audience.
Lamar’s accolades come at a busy time as he is set to headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show and embark on a tour with SZA. Meanwhile, Drake, although remaining silent on Lamar’s wins, is embroiled in a legal battle with Universal Music Group over the song. He accuses them of artificially boosting the song’s success to harm his brand during negotiations. UMG has denied these claims.
Dennis Graham’s indifferent stance to Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy sweep shines a light on the varying reactions within the music industry. While some revel in the glory, others remain unbothered, focusing on their battles and triumphs.
