Hey, did you hear? Thundercat dropped two new tracks on Monday, September 15. Yes, you heard that right! “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” and “Children of the Baked Potato” featuring Remi Wolf. It’s been two whole years since he dropped some fresh beats like these. This is just a taste of what’s to come in his North American tour.
Brainfeeder released both songs, and Grammy Award-winning producer Greg Kurstin worked his magic on them. “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” gives us the chill bass grooves and falsetto vocals we love from Thundercat. “Children of the Baked Potato” brings a different vibe, a lot more animated and driven by Wolf’s energy. It’s also a shoutout to a legendary LA jazz venue.
Speaking about Wolf, Thundercat said, “She’s a child of the Baked Potato like me. She knew exactly what the explosive track needed. And it was wild to watch her make it happen. The more I listen to the explosive track, it’s clear there was no one better I could have picked.”
The title “Children of the Baked Potato” is a nod to The Baked Potato, a small but pretty legendary jazz club in Studio City. Famous for its baked potatoes and for hosting amazing musicians for decades. Thundercat has been influenced by this place big time.
The song premiered on a huge outdoor screen in Shibuya TV, Tokyo, and on 42 screens at Miyashita Park. There was even an in-person viewing experience and a chat with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Music Daily show. Thundercat and Wolf talked all about their collab.
For those who don’t know, Thundercat, aka Stephen Bruner, is a crazy talented bassist, singer, and producer. He’s known for mixing jazz, funk, and R&B. He used to be in the band Suicidal Tendencies and then got famous for his solo work and collabs with big names like Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, and Mac Miller.
His albums, The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam (2015) and Drunk (2017) were a big hit. Drunk had the viral song “Them Changes.” In 2020, he dropped It Is What It Is, which won Best Progressive R&B album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. He also worked on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, which is one of the most celebrated Hip-Hop albums of the last decade.
