At a lively EP launch party, Busta Rhymes took a heartfelt moment to celebrate fellow rap icon, Lil Kim, urging her to make a comeback.
On a Friday night in March, at a bustling Manhattan venue, Busta Rhymes shifted the spotlight from his latest EP release, “Dragon Season… Equinox,” to honor Lil Kim. In front of an eager crowd, he passionately called for her return to the music scene.
“I made a decision the other night,” Busta declared, sharing how he reached out to Kim. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I’m tired of watching you sit down and be quiet. I’m tired of it.” Busta highlighted how other legends, like Missy Elliott and Mary J. Blige, continue to receive accolades for their work, reminding everyone that Lil Kim has also collaborated with these greats.
Busta’s speech, filled with admiration, encouraged Lil Kim to reclaim her throne, urging, “It’s time to light the fuse, the dynamite stick… It’s time to get active again, queen.” The crowd erupted in support, showing love for the rapper known as the queen of Brooklyn.
Adding to his tribute, Busta reassured Kim of her lasting impact, “We miss you…and we love you… I’m gonna make sure that we hold you in the highest regard, queen.” His heartfelt address ended amidst cheers, with fans eager to see Lil Kim back in action.
Beyond his tribute to Lil Kim, Busta was also part of a recent musical project with Karriem Riggins and Westside Gunn. They released a song in memory of J Dilla, a beloved producer, on what has come to be known as “J Dilla Day” in Detroit.
Karriem Riggins, who coordinated the track, shared his excitement about the collaboration, mentioning how he had long wanted to work with Westside Gunn. After sending Gunn a beat, the project quickly took shape, eventually involving Busta after a phone call that led to his participation.
The track wasn’t initially intended as a tribute, but Westside Gunn’s verse transformed it. He included a heartfelt line praying to J Dilla, making the song a fitting homage to the late producer.
Busta Rhymes’ recent actions highlight his passion for honoring both current and past legends of the rap world. He shines a light on the importance of icons like Lil Kim returning to the stage and continues to honor the contributions of artists like J Dilla.
