Wow, guess what? Taraji P. Henson is hitting Broadway for the first time next spring! She’s going to be in a revival of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, a real heavy-hitter of a drama by the late August Wilson. She’ll be performing alongside Cedric the Entertainer at a Shubert theater in New York.
Taraji, who you probably know from Hidden Figures, will be playing Bertha Holly, a boarding house boss lady in 1911 Pittsburgh. Cedric’s going to be her hubby, Seth.
Debbie Allen is running the show and Brian Anthony Moreland is producing. This is Taraji’s first time on Broadway, but Cedric’s actually been here before – he was in American Buffalo back in 2008.
The play is part of Wilson’s ten-part series about African Americans during the Great Migration. It’s all about the struggles of finding your identity and staying strong, which still hits home even 100+ years later.
Producer Brian Anthony Moreland said it’s a real privilege to work on Wilson’s stuff again. He was like, “We are truly honored to return to August Wilson’s legacy,” and calls Joe Turner’s Come and Gone Wilson’s best work — a real deep dive into pain, identity, and hope.”
Moreland’s pretty pumped about the whole thing. He said, “With Debbie Allen’s visionary direction and this amazing cast, we’re going to give a performance that sticks with you.”
Moreland’s done some cool stuff recently, like The Piano Lesson with Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington and Danielle Brooks, and a staging of Othello with Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The revival is set to open in spring 2025, but we’re still waiting to hear exactly which Shubert venue it’ll be at.
