Roxanne Shanté has once again made history, emerging as the first solo female rapper to snag a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.

Ever since Roxanne Shanté burst onto the scene with ‘Roxanne’s Revenge’ in 1984, she has been a pioneering force in the music industry. Her latest accolade— a Lifetime Achievement Award— is being celebrated, and it’s no surprise given her influence and creativity.

This prestigious award is reserved for those who have made significant artistic contributions throughout their careers. It’s set to be presented at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, marking a milestone not just for Shanté, but for female artists everywhere.

Joining her in this year’s honors are other musical icons such as Frankie Beverly, The Clash, Dr. Bobby Jones, Taj Mahal, Prince, and Frankie Valli, highlighting the diversity and impact of the awardees.

Hip hop legends like Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Salt-N-Pepa, and N.W.A have previously received this honor. Shanté’s accomplishment now places her amongst these giants, solidifying her legacy in the industry.

Reflecting on her career Shanté told CBS Mornings’ Gayle King that entering the music industry comes with dreams of financial success, chart-topping hits, and Grammy recognition. Having achieved all three, her journey is a testament to her dedication and talent.

Before this Grammy recognition, Shanté had received her last major accolade, a hefty Grandmaster Award from the Paid in Full Foundation, complete with a million-dollar prize, praised by none other than Nas.

The award ceremony took place last October in Las Vegas where Nas hailed Shanté as a cornerstone of hip hop, alongside other legends like Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz.

On social media, Nas expressed gratitude for the contributions of these pioneers, noting that without them, hip hop wouldn’t be what it is today. He shared a powerful image with Rakim, Scarface, and himself celebrating these game-changers.

Nas paid a special tribute to Shanté, calling her ‘The Queen’ and acknowledging her roots and revolutionary role in the industry. He recognized her as a crucial figure who helped shape the path for artists like himself.

Roxanne Shanté’s Grammy achievement is a monumental moment for hip hop, especially for female artists. Her legacy is etched in the history of music, inspiring future generations.
