Kanye West is yet again in the spotlight, and not for his music.
His Yeezy website was shut down following outrage over a shirt featuring a swastika, priced at $20. Once word got out, Shopify took swift action by removing the site, which now results in an error message when accessed.
Kanye isn’t new to controversial actions. Before the incident, he ran a Super Bowl ad directing viewers to his site. Shortly after, all regular items vanished, leaving only the infamous shirt labeled ‘HH-01,’ possibly hinting at ‘Heil Hitler.’
The rapper, known for his volatile online expressions, had even posted ‘Heil Hitler’ days before this chaos erupted. His history of antisemitic remarks is long-standing, and this episode seemed like another entry in a troubling trend.
When the shirt surfaced, Shopify remained tight-lipped with support staff instructed to offer ‘no comment.’ However, the product lingered on the site for at least a day before its eventual removal.
Kanye’s online behavior seemed relentless. On February 6, he launched into a series of disturbing posts, starting with a call for Diddy’s release from jail. His tirade soon escalated into explicit attacks against the Jewish community.
‘IM NEVER APOLOGIZING FOR MY JEWISH COMMENTS. I CAN SAY WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANNA SAY FOREVER,’ Kanye asserted, lashing out about his past comments that cost him an Adidas partnership.
He targeted Jewish people, blaming them for what he perceives as societal wrongs: ‘YOU ABORT BLACK CHILDREN FOR STEM CELLS. ABORTION IS MURDER…’ The tirade didn’t stop there as he challenged his employees to quit if they disagreed: ‘ANYBODY WHO WORK FOR ME THAT DONT AGREE. FUCK YOU QUIT.’
Before the account was banned, Kanye made it clear he was ‘completely sober,’ underlining that his views were long-held. He even went on to joke about having Jewish friends he couldn’t trust, adding a laughing emoji for effect.
The episode wrapped with a nod to Elon Musk’s supposed ‘Nazi salute’ at Trump’s inauguration. Despite the backlash, Kanye has remained silent, leaving his future steps uncertain.
