His feelings surfaced when Sauce Walka showed a grand tribute to Gillie’s late son, YNG Cheese, who was tragically killed in a shooting in 2023. Gillie and his podcast co-host Wallo were invited for an interview at Sauce Walka’s Splash House.
During the interview, Sauce Walka unveiled a large cardboard cutout of YNG Cheese. This gesture honored the life and legacy of Cheese, and it immediately brought tears to Gillie’s eyes. ‘I love you n-ggas, man. Gotta hold back my tears, man. God damn,’ Gillie expressed, struggling with his emotions.
Gillie, Wallo, and Sauce Walka stood together for a photo with the cutout, marking a moment of remembrance. YNG Cheese, whose real name was Davon, was a beloved son to Gillie. His tragic death in July 2023 at age 25 left a ‘black hole’ in Gillie’s heart, as he shared on social media.
Following the tragedy, Gillie took to social media to express his grief and gratitude for the support received. ‘I miss u like $hit Dev… thanks 4 all the support from family, friends, and all of my followers y’all really helping me get thru these ruff times,’ he wrote, reflecting his deep sorrow and appreciation.
The Philadelphia rapper-turned-podcaster recounted the harrowing experience of preparing his son’s body for burial. ‘The worst time had to be when I had to wash his body,’ he admitted. It was during this painful yet significant moment he felt he truly became a man.
In Islam, Gillie found solace in the tradition of sending loved ones off in the right way. Despite the pain, he took comfort in knowing he did everything he could to honor his son’s life. ‘It was a gift and a curse… a very painful thing to see your son laying there,’ he confided, speaking of the emotional weight he carried.
Wallo also shared his heartfelt feelings towards Cheese, saying, ‘Lil Cuz usually when I talk to you, I got a lot to tell you. Tonight the pain in my heart & tears spoke to you.’ His words underscored the familial love and deep loss felt by those close to Cheese.
