Drake’s latest album struggles to meet expectations, landing behind Kendrick Lamar’s in sales.
- Despite predictions, ‘Some Sexy Songs 4 U’ underperforms against Kendrick Lamar’s previous success.
- Drake’s album still makes waves, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.
- Huge streaming numbers contrast lackluster sales for Drake’s new release.
- Debate arises on whether insufficient promotion impacted Drake’s album performance.
Drake’s new album, ‘Some Sexy Songs 4 U,’ hasn’t quite reached the heights fans expected. Its first-week sales are projected at 250,000 units. That’s a respectable figure, but it falls short when measured alongside Kendrick Lamar’s ‘GNX’, which debuted with 319,000 units.
Even though Drake’s album is expected to top the Billboard 200, marking his 14th number-one, it is also projected to be his fifth lowest-selling album in terms of opening week sales. Highlights from his past like ‘So Far Gone’ and ‘Care Package’ have sold less, but recent albums have performed better.
A major factor is the album’s lack of a hefty marketing push since it was released through OVO and Santa Anna, unlike his previous projects with Universal Music Group. This absence of promotion might have played a part in the dip in sales.
Despite the sales figures, streaming platforms tell a different story. ‘Some Sexy Songs 4 U’ drew in 56.6 million streams on Spotify on its first day, making it the second biggest debut of the year. On Apple Music, it smashed records for the biggest single-day streams for an R&B album.
Interestingly, Drake’s collaboration with PARTYNEXTDOOR saw him surpass Kendrick Lamar briefly for the most single-day Spotify streams by a rapper this year, totaling 92.4 million streams.
While on the surface, sales might seem low, the album still generated significant buzz in the streaming world, suggesting that the conventional sales numbers might not tell the full story.
Despite lukewarm sales, Drake’s album still dominated streaming platforms.
