When Will Smith decided to return to the music scene after 20 years, he turned to rap heavyweights JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar for some profound advice.

In a candid chat on Sway in the Morning, held right in Philadelphia, Smith spoke about his inspiring interactions with JAY-Z and Kendrick. He revealed how these conversations shaped his new album, ‘Based on a True Story.’

Speaking with JAY-Z, affectionately known as Hov, Smith was advised to remain authentic. JAY-Z told him, “Don’t fake your story.” His words of wisdom encouraged Smith to embrace his true experiences and craft an album that truly reflects his journey. ‘Be true to your story,’ is what JAY-Z emphasized, sparking the idea for the album’s title.

Kendrick Lamar, in his straightforward manner, echoed a similar sentiment. “Man, just say that shit you always been scared to say,” Kendrick urged. The message was clear: honesty was key. Will found the whole experience powerful yet daunting but ultimately knew that pursuing authenticity was the right path.

The momentum of their advice carried Smith through the production of ‘Based on a True Story,’ which is set to release soon. The album contains 14 tracks and features collaborations with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, and Jaden Smith. Smith’s return is marked by singles like ‘Beautiful Scars’ and ‘You Can Make It.’

Smith isn’t stopping at just the album. He’s embarking on his first solo headline tour, spanning across the globe. Starting in Morocco and wrapping in Paris, the tour promises to be a celebration of his musical evolution. It kicks off on June 25 and runs until September 2.

Will Smith’s return to music is more than just a comeback; it’s a celebration of his truth, guided by the sage advice of two remarkable artists. His journey reflects a desire for authenticity and honesty in his art.
