In a heartfelt plea, Fetty Wap’s sister urged for her brother’s early release from prison, emphasizing redemption over mere punishment.

Fetty Wap, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, has been serving a six-year sentence following his arrest for involvement in a drug ring. His sentence was made official in May 2023, although he has been incarcerated since October 2021.

Rumors about his early release had sparked earlier in the year, but Fetty Wap himself quashed them. His sister, Divinity Maxwell-Butts, took to Instagram, advocating for his early release during what she called ‘Second Chance Month.’ She highlighted that Fetty has taken responsibility for his nonviolent offense and has already served over half of his sentence.

“My brother has taken responsibility and served over half his sentence for a nonviolent offense,” she stated on Instagram. She argued for justice to include mercy, suggesting his sentence be commuted so he can return to his family and purpose.

Fetty Wap had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine. Prosecutors had pushed for a longer sentence, accusing him of glamorizing drug trade while reaping millions from his musical career post-2015.

His arrest took place at New York’s Citi Field in October 2021, right before he was set to perform at the Rolling Loud Festival. Law enforcement officials seized a staggering amount of drugs and cash during his arrest, including 16 kilograms of cocaine and $1.5 million in cash.

In an interview with XXL, Fetty Wap admitted to not taking his career seriously enough. He expressed regret for placing trust in the wrong people and acknowledged his own accountability for his actions, distancing himself from blaming others for his predicament.

Reflecting on past decisions, he expressed gratitude for being able to see light at the end of the tunnel despite the impact on his career. “I’m just grateful that I’m still here; I’m still breathing,” he shared, recognizing that the imprisonment may stifle his career but seeing it as a lesson learned.

As Fetty Wap’s family continues to seek clemency, they stress the need for a balance of justice and compassion, hoping for his early return to those he holds dear.
