Hip-hop heads, did you know that Kurtis Blow’s 1980 hit, “The Breaks,” was the first rap 12″ single to sell over 500,000 copies?

Produced by J.B. Moore and Robert Ford Jr., the iconic hip-hop record has sampled by countless artists over the years, including Timbaland, Tha Alkaholiks and most famously on KRS-One’s ’95 single, “MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know.”

Running at over 7 minutes, “The Breaks” became one of the earliest hip-hop hits, peaking at number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 4 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Kurtis Blow was also the first hip-hop artist to be signed to a major record label, signing to Mercury Records in 1979 and releasing his first single “Christmas Rappin’.”
