KRS-ONE

Hip-hop heads, did you know that back in the day KRS-One was firing shots at Run-D.M.C. while he was still on the come up?

In a recent interview with HipHopDX, D.M.C. revealed that when The Blastmaster came out with the track “Criminal Minded” in 1987, he was taking shots at the kings at the time – Run-D.M.C.

Talking big words on the mic but still irrelevant

KRS-One’s line was a subtle dig at the group’s 1985 record, King of Rock, and their undisputed grip on the rap game at the time. Off the strength of their third studio album, Raising Hell, which became the first hip-hop album to go platinum, Run-D.M.C. were at the top and KRS was gunning for them.

DMC:Yeah KRS-One took shots at us. On “Criminal Minded” he said, “Kings lose crowns.” Everybody was trying to come at us, but thats why on Raising Hell we went ballistic to let mothafuckas know, “You got rhymes and lyrics, but you ain’t taking shit [from us].” When Run wrote “You Be Illin’,” that was to show this ain’t no joke. We run this.

More than 20 years after KRS fired those shots, he stands as unarguably one of the greatest rappers hip-hop has ever seen, while Run-D.M.C.’s legendary status has been engrained in the culture.
